DRONE FILMING SERVICES

In addition to our helicopter and fixed wing aircraft camera platforms The Aerial Film Company also operate drone equipment. Drones have brought a new dimension to aerial filming with battery life and payload lift capability increasing rapidly. Our primary drone is the Freefly Alta 8, capable of lifting 9.1 kg payload which typically allows us to use the Red Helium/Monstro or the Alexa Mini cameras. Using the Alta 8 allows us the freedom to mount the camera either below the drone or above allowing us to track subjects from below if required. Typically we fly the Alta 8 with a three to four person crew including pilot, camera operator, focus puller and a Camera Tech.

For tasks that require rapid deployment we also use the DJI Inspire 2 Pro Cinema set up with X7 camera. Being a smaller drone than the Alta 8, we typically use the DJI Inspire 2 to get in amongst the action. A smaller crew is required for this system, thus on productions where budget is limited, the DJI represents a cheaper alternative.

DRONES

FREEFLY ALTA 8

This exceptional drone is a professional rig designed to carry Freefly’s MoVI 5; not only underneath but also on top, opening up many more shooting possibilities. It is the drone that aerial movie makers have been waiting for. The Freefly ALTA 8 unpacks, ready to shoot, in under five minutes. It’s easy to fly, powerful, adaptable, reliable and optimised for up to twenty-pound payloads. It can confidently fly RED, ARRI and other professional cameras, guided by the state-of-the-art Synapse Flight Controller.

Designed to make life easier for elite aerial cinematographers, it arrives in a robust, industry standard pelican case and is ready to simply unfold and fly. Freefly designed the ALTA with MoVI camera stabilisers in mind. This gives you the ability to make a smooth transition from hand held filming to capturing aerials in just moments using the Toad in the Hole Quick Release.

DJI INSPIRE 2

For productions that require very quick deployment, we have the DJI Inspire 2 Pro Cinema drone. With the Zenmuse X7 camera and an S35 image sensor it offers 6K CinemaDNG RAW with a wide dynamic range of up to 14 stops. The X7 also introduces the DL-Mount, the world’s first integrated aerial lens mount that allows for switching between four available prime lenses quickly and easily.

This Inspire 2 is frequently used in situations where the drone is likely to sustain damage, such as getting up close to explosions, vehicle crashes and other high-risk stunts. It allows you to put the viewer closer to the action with minimal cost in the event of damage to the drone.
