F1

Description

We’re honoured to have played a part in one of the most anticipated films of the decade: F1 – The Movie, directed by Joseph Kosinski and starring Brad Pitt. Created in close collaboration with Formula 1, the film promises an unprecedented level of realism, scale and immersion, placing audiences closer to the speed, intensity and danger of the sport than ever before. The aerial cinematography of F1 aims to take viewers closer to the sport than ever before.

Our involvement focussed on immersive aerial cinematography, utilising our Shotover Systems to capture some of the film’s most ambitious and technically demanding sequences. Most notably, we were responsible for the huge opening shot at Silverstone, working closely with Academy Award–winning cinematographer Claudio Miranda ASC and director Joseph Kosinski. Designed to immediately establish the scale and authenticity of the film, the sequence required absolute precision, both creatively and operationally, flying at speed in close proximity to F1 infrastructure while maintaining the cinematic fluidity demanded by a feature film of this calibre.

Beyond Silverstone, filming took us to Abu Dhabi, where we captured aerial sequences that showcase the drama and spectacle of Formula 1 under lights, as well as to Oxfordshire, where further air-to-ground shots were executed. Each location presented its own challenges, from tight operational windows and regulatory constraints to the need for seamless integration with ground-based camera systems and race environments.

Working alongside Kosinski and Miranda, fresh from their collaboration on Top Gun: Maverick was a privilege and the project exemplified the evolving role of aerial cinematography in modern filmmaking. Every shot was engineered not simply to look spectacular, but to serve the story and place the audience directly inside the world of Formula 1. It certainly put our camera pilot Will Banks and Aerial DOP Phil Arntz through their paces.

F1 – The Movie represents a new benchmark in immersive motorsport cinema, and we’re proud to have helped bring its vision to life from the air.
